Vierves-sur-Viroin Castle

Vierves-sur-Viroin Castle is a historic fortress located in the village of Vierves-sur-Viroin within the municipality of Viroinval, Belgium. Situated in the Province of Namur, the estate traces its origins back to a seigneury that was elevated to a barony during the 15th century. Originally falling under the jurisdiction of the County of Namur before transferring to the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, the territory encompassed several surrounding areas including Matagne-la-Grande and Treignes. The site served as a significant military stronghold for centuries, playing a crucial defensive role in the region until the 17th century.

The architectural landscape of the castle reflects a long evolution spanning from the 15th to the 19th centuries. Although the original feudal structure was severely damaged by fire around 1762, it was subsequently rebuilt, resulting in the edifice that stands today. Historically, the property is closely linked to the powerful Barons of Hamal, who acquired the title in 1567. This influential family served as high bailiffs of the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse region during French rule and retained ownership even after the area was transferred to the Province of Namur in 1815. Earlier lords of the estate also held the prestigious title of Viscount of Anseremme as far back as the 11th century.
