Venetian Acropolis Castle

The Venetian Acropolis Castle is located on the Butrint Peninsula in southern Albania, within the Butrint National Park. The castle was built in the 14th century by the Venetians, who purchased the land from the Angevin Kingdom of Naples in 1386. The castle was constructed on the highest point of the peninsula, overlooking the Channel of Vivari.

The castle is an example of Venetian architecture, built using ancient blocks. It holds significant historical importance, having been involved in various wars and conquests throughout the centuries. The castle was abandoned in 1572 during the wars between the Venetians and the Ottoman Empire, leading to the creation of the Venetian Triangular Castle as a replacement settlement. The castle later came under French rule, followed by Ottoman rule, until Albanian independence in 1912.

Today, the castle is open to the public and houses the Archaeological Museum of Butrint, which was established in 1936. The castle has undergone restoration, notably by Luigi Maria Ugolini. The surrounding area is a national park, featuring ancient ruins, a lake, and a channel. The castle's history and architecture make it an interesting and significant site to visit, providing a glimpse into Albania's rich and complex past.
