Tržan Castle in Modruš

Tržan Castle stands as a prominent ruined medieval fortress located above the village of Modruš in the Lika region of central Croatia. Perched on a steep ridge at an elevation of 670 meters on the eastern slopes of the Velika Kapela mountain, the site commands a strategic view over the historic route connecting the Adriatic Sea to the Pannonian Basin. Originally established as a stronghold potentially dating back to the 9th century during conflicts between Dalmatian and Pannonian rulers, the castle served as the administrative seat of the former Modruš County. Its construction utilizes hewn stone in a distinctive fishbone pattern, reflecting high-quality masonry skills that suggest the involvement of foreign master builders during its expansion.

The fortress holds immense historical significance as the primary continental seat of the renowned Frankopan noble family from 1193 until approximately 1553. Granted to the family by King Béla III, the castle became the ruling center for powerful bans such as Ivan V and Nikola IV Frankopan, who reconstructed and enlarged the complex. Notably, despite the town of Modruš below being plundered and burned by Ottoman forces in 1493, Tržan Castle itself was never conquered throughout its history due to its ideal defensive position. Following the Frankopan era, it served as a headquarters for the Croatian Military Frontier under Habsburg control until the 19th century.

Today, Tržan Castle exists as a ruin, yet it remains a testament to medieval military architecture and Croatian nobility. The name Tržan, derived from the word for trade, highlights its historical role as a bustling commercial hub during the 15th century. While the structure is no longer inhabited, its remaining walls, bastions, and towers offer insight into the defensive strategies of the region. The site continues to mark the location where ancient Roman roads were later improved into the Josephina road, preserving a legacy that spans from early Slavic principalities to the Habsburg Monarchy.
