Tornaco Castle or

Tornaco Castle, also known as Château de Vervoz, is a historic residence located in the village of Vervoz within the municipality of Clavier in the Liège province of Belgium. Constructed around 1764 by Baron Victor de Tornaco, the structure likely occupies the site of an older building, though the only surviving element from that earlier period is a seventeenth-century tower. The estate has remained under the continuous ownership of the Tornaco family since its initial construction, marking it as a significant example of hereditary stewardship in the region. The architectural ensemble dates primarily to the mid-eighteenth century and is built from limestone rubble, arranged symmetrically in an L-shape around a manor courtyard.

The property features distinctive architectural elements, including imposing limestone pillars topped with mid-nineteenth-century vases at the entrance gate and a handsome two-story carriage entrance to the west. Visitors can access a terrace bordered by wrought-iron railings via an elegant double-spiral staircase. The outbuildings, which include stables, tack rooms, and carriage houses, were originally established in the eighteenth century and later remodeled during the nineteenth century. Despite its age, the castle formed a cohesive and well-preserved historical unit until recent events altered its condition.

Tragically, on the night of June 4-5, 2020, a severe fire broke out at the castle, resulting in one fatality and causing significant damage to the historic structure. Following this devastating event, restoration efforts were initiated to repair the harm done to the estate. As of 2025, the castle is currently undergoing restoration work. While it remains a private residence inhabited by the Tornaco family, its history and ongoing recovery make it a notable landmark in Belgian heritage, reflecting both its architectural beauty and the resilience of its long-standing owners.
