Toprakkale

Toprakkale, historically known as Rusahinili or the "city of King Rusa I," is an ancient Urartian fortress situated in eastern Turkey near the modern city of Van. Constructed during the reign of King Rusa I, the site served as a significant stronghold within the Urartu kingdom. Its strategic location places it just east of Van City and close to Lake Van in what is now Van Province. The name Toprakkale itself translates to "Earth Castle" or "Soil Castle," reflecting its physical presence in the landscape. As a key urban center of the Urartian civilization, it stands as a testament to the engineering and organizational capabilities of this Iron Age culture in the Armenian Highlands.

The historical significance of Toprakkale is underscored by extensive archaeological excavations conducted by international teams from Germany, the United Kingdom, and other nations.
