Soncino Castle, known locally as Rocca di Soncino, is a historic military fortress located in the town of Soncino within the Lombardy region of northern Italy. Originally constructed in the 10th century to defend the borough against Hungarian raids, the structure has undergone significant evolution over a millennium. While its earliest walls date back to the 900s, the castle saw major reconstruction in 1283 following destruction by armies from Milan and Brescia. Throughout the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, it served as a strategic asset during conflicts between the Venetian Republic and the Duchy of Milan. Notable enhancements were made under Duke Francesco Sforza in the mid-15th century, including the addition of a distinctive circular tower and reinforced fortifications designed by prominent engineers like Benedetto Ferrini and Bartolomeo Gadio.

The fortress transformed from a purely defensive stronghold into a noble residence after 1536, when Holy Roman Emperor Charles V granted the site to the Stampa family. During this era, the interior was adorned with frescoes by renowned artists Bernardino Gatti and Vincenzo Campi, blending military utility with artistic elegance. The architectural layout features four towers, with the Castellan's Tower being particularly significant as the former governor's residence. The complex includes a main courtyard with a central well designed to sustain occupants during sieges, along with secret underground passages and a ravelin entrance that replaced an original drawbridge in the 19th century.

In 1876, the last Marquis of Soncino, Massimiliano Stampa, bequeathed the castle to the town, ensuring its preservation for public heritage. Subsequent restoration efforts began in 1883 under the guidance of architect Luca Beltrami. Today, the castle stands as a harmonious blend of medieval defense mechanisms and Renaissance residential beauty, situated directly adjacent to the urban square. It remains a key historical landmark in Lombardy, reflecting centuries of political shifts, military innovation, and artistic patronage that defined the region's turbulent history.
