Sklabiňa Castle is a prominent medieval fortress located near the village of Sklabiňa in northern Slovakia, within the Žilina Region. Perched at an altitude of 626 meters, it stands as one of the largest and most frequently visited castles in the area. Originally constructed in stages beginning during the first half of the 13th century, the site was first mentioned in historical records around 1242, with significant expansions occurring in the early 14th century. By 1328, it became the administrative seat of Turóc County, housing local archives and a prison. The structure reflects a blend of medieval military architecture and later Renaissance influences, particularly after the Révay family acquired the property in 1527 and added a manor house in the early 1600s.

The castle possesses a turbulent history marked by conflict and destruction. It was burned by Hussite forces in 1434 but subsequently rebuilt and expanded in the late 15th century. Unlike many Slovak fortresses that fell into disuse during the Renaissance, Sklabiňa remained active for centuries under the continuous ownership of the Révay family until 1914. Its final destruction occurred in September 1944 when Nazi forces demolished the complex while suppressing the Slovak National Uprising. Following decades of neglect and minimal repairs in 1970, the site remained largely ruined until volunteer-led restoration efforts commenced in 2000.

Today, Sklabiňa Castle exists as a partially restored ruin that continues to undergo archaeological excavation and conservation work. These ongoing projects have successfully rendered several sections of the complex accessible to the public once again. The site has grown in popularity, attracting between 10,000 and 13,000 visitors annually between 2020 and 2024. It serves as a significant historical landmark that illustrates the region's resilience, transitioning from a strategic county seat and family residence to a symbol of cultural heritage preservation driven by community dedication.
