Șiria
Șiria is a historic commune located in Arad County, Romania, situated approximately 28 kilometers from the city of Arad at the junction of the Arad Plateau and the Zărand Mountains. First documented in 1169, the area comprises three villages: Șiria, Galșa, and Mâsca. The site is perhaps most famous for the ruins of Șiria Citadel, a strategic fortress dating back to the 13th century. Throughout its history, the castle held significant military importance, having been possessed by John Hunyadi in 1444, occupied by rebels under György Dózsa, and later serving as a garrison for Michael the Brave. The location witnessed a pivotal moment in European history on August 13, 1849, when the Hungarian army surrendered to Russian forces nearby, effectively ending the Hungarian Revolution of 1848.
Beyond the medieval citadel, the commune features diverse architectural heritage reflecting its complex past. Notable structures include a Baroque-style castle in Galșa from the 17th century and the Bohuș Mansion in Șiria, a Neoclassical monument constructed in 1838. The latter currently houses the Ioan Slavici Memorial Museum, dedicated to the renowned Romanian writer born in the area, as well as the composer Emil Monţia. The local economy remains rooted in agriculture, particularly viticulture, while also benefiting from granite and limestone mining operations in Galșa.
Today, Șiria serves as both an agricultural hub and a cultural destination. While the medieval castle stands in ruins, it remains a key tourist attraction alongside several historic churches built between the 18th and early 19th centuries, including the Adormirea Maicii Domnului churches in Șiria and Mâsca. The commune preserves its legacy through these monuments and museums, offering visitors insight into its role during major conflicts like the Habsburg destruction of 1785 and the political shifts of World War II. With a mixed population of Romanians, Hungarians, Roms, and Germans, Șiria continues to maintain its unique cultural identity within the region.
