Sherwana Castle
wikipedia

Sherwana Castle, also known as Shirwanah Castle, is a historic fortress located in Kalar within the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Constructed in 1866 by Mohamed Pasha Jaff, a prominent Kurdish leader serving the Ottoman Empire, the structure was built using stone and brick to serve as both a strategic military stronghold and the ancestral home of the influential Jaff family. The castle stands on the banks of the Shirwan River, a location chosen specifically to guard against rival tribes and regional foes during a period when the Jaff were consolidating power in the Shahrizor region following conflicts involving Ottoman, Persian, and local forces.

The site holds significant historical value as a symbol of the Jaff family's golden age, reflecting their rise from nomadic origins to becoming a major political power in nineteenth-century Kurdistan. Throughout its existence, the castle has witnessed various Kurdish and Ottoman conflicts, including tensions with the Hamavand tribe who allied with Russian forces to destabilize the area. Over time, the residence passed to Mohammed Ali Beg Jaff and remained a central hub for the family's affairs even as regional dynamics shifted during World War I and the subsequent British occupation of Mesopotamia.

In recent decades, Sherwana Castle has faced considerable challenges, sustaining damage from heavy rains in 2014 and an earthquake in 2017, adding to earlier destruction incurred during the 1990s. Despite these setbacks, the property underwent restoration efforts in 2018 and is currently partially restored. Today, it remains open to the public as an important cultural landmark, offering visitors a glimpse into the architectural heritage and complex tribal history of the Kurdistan Region while continuing to stand as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Jaff dynasty.
