Shaniwar Wada is a historic fortification located in Pune, India, originally constructed in 1732. It served as the prestigious seat of the Peshwas, the prime ministers of the Maratha Confederacy, until the empire's decline in 1818. The structure exemplifies distinct Maratha architecture, though its design was altered during construction. While initially planned as a seven-story building made entirely of stone, political objections from the Chhatrapati in Satara mandated that only the ground floor be built with stone. Consequently, the upper stories were completed using brick, reflecting the hierarchical protocols of the era regarding royal construction rights.

The site holds profound historical significance, having housed over a thousand residents by 1758 and witnessing pivotal events in Indian history. Its most notorious chapter occurred in 1773 when the ruling Peshwa, Narayanrao, was brutally murdered within the complex by guards acting on orders from his uncle and aunt. This tragic event spawned enduring local legends claiming that Narayanrao's ghost still cries out for help on full moon nights, making it one of India's most famous haunted locations. Although the fortification was largely destroyed by an unexplained fire in 1828, the surviving structures have been preserved and are currently maintained as a popular tourist attraction.
