# Sanok Castle

Sanok Royal Castle stands prominently on a steep slope 317 meters above sea level in Sanok, Poland, offering commanding views over the San River. Originally constructed in the late 14th century under the patronage of King Casimir III the Great, the structure replaced an earlier stronghold that had been destroyed during a Tatar invasion in 1241. The architecture reflects a distinctive blend of Polish Gothic and Renaissance styles, the latter achieved through extensive renovations ordered by Queen Bona Sforza between 1523 and 1548. Subsequent expansions included the addition of a south wing in the late 16th century and a north wing around the turn of the 18th century, although the south wing was unfortunately demolished in 1915.

The site holds profound historical significance as a former royal residence and administrative center. It hosted the wedding of King Władysław Jagiełło in 1417 and served as the home for Queen Sophia of Halshany until her death. Later, it provided refuge for Isabella Jagiellon, Queen of Hungary, following her escape from Transylvania. The castle also functioned as a seat for local authorities and the Higher Court of German law. During the Napoleonic Wars in 1809, it became a focal point of military conflict when General Franciszek Ksawery Krasicki successfully defended the fortress against Austrian forces.

Today, following reconstruction efforts completed in 2010, the castle serves as the seat of the Sanok Historical Museum. While parts of the original complex were lost to demolition and war, the remaining structures preserve centuries of Polish heritage. The museum currently occupies the historic halls, allowing visitors to explore the rich legacy of the region, from its medieval fortifications to its role in royal politics and military history.
