Sabbionara Castle, also known as the Castle of Avio, is a prominent medieval fortress located in the comune of Avio within the Trentino region of northern Italy. Strategically positioned to command the Vallagarina valley along the Adige River, the structure was first documented in 1053 as Castellum Ava. Its architectural design is formidable, featuring three distinct lines of defensive walls and five towers, including the notorious Torre della Picadora, which historically served as the site for executions by hanging. The interior complex centers around a massive keep, or mastio, surrounded by various edifices such as the baronial Palace.

The castle holds significant historical value due to its varied ownership and strategic importance over the centuries. Originally held by the Castelbarco family in the 12th century, it was ceded to the Republic of Venice in 1411, who enlarged the site and added a chapel dedicated to St. George adorned with the doge's coats of arms. In 1509, forces under Maximilian I of Austria conquered the fortress before granting it to the counts of Arco, though the Castelbarco family eventually repurchased the property in the 17th century. Today, the castle is preserved and managed by the Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano (FAI), serving as a protected historic site and museum open to the public.

Artistically, the castle is renowned for its exceptional medieval frescoes, which decorate several internal rooms across two primary campaigns. The most famous is the Chamber of Love, painted around 1330 by an unknown workshop, depicting allegorical scenes of romance where Cupid chases lovers on horseback. A second cycle of frescoes, executed approximately two decades later around 1350, features less elaborate paintings of battles. These well-preserved artworks offer a rare glimpse into secular life and artistic expression during the Trecento period, making the castle a unique cultural destination in the Alps.
