Schachenstein Castle, known locally as Burg Schachenstein, is a ruined hill castle situated in the municipality of Thörl in Styria, Austria. Perched approximately 640 meters above sea level on a rocky spur of the Schöckelberg, the site commands a strategic position overlooking the Thörlbach stream and north of Bruck an der Mur. Constructed in 1464 by Abbot John II Schachner of Lambrecht, it holds historical distinction as the last hill castle built in the Styria region. The structure was originally designed not as a military garrison with subject tenants, but rather as a fortified lordly residence and summer retreat for the abbots of Saint Lambert's Abbey.

The castle played a vital role in regional security and religious administration throughout the centuries. Its location allowed it to guard a critical constriction on the road from Einodgräben to Mariazell, originally protected by a fortified gateway. Beyond serving as an abbatial home, the fortress provided a crucial refuge for the population of the Aflenz valley during periods of instability, including Hungarian invasions and Turkish raids. Despite significant local unrest such as the Baumkircher feud, the castle itself was never besieged. It underwent architectural extensions in 1630 and again in 1740 to maintain its functionality and status.

By the end of the 18th century, Schachenstein lost its strategic and residential significance, leading to its gradual decline into the ruins visible today.
