Rocca di Villalago is a medieval fortress located in the town of Villalago within the Province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Originally constructed during the 8th century, this military structure was strategically positioned on a hill overlooking the Sagittario Valley to serve as a vital defensive outpost and watchtower. The architecture reflects a distinct Romanesque style, characterized by defensive walls and a prominent cylindrical keep standing approximately ten to twelve meters high. While portions of the original defensive walls have been replaced by civilian housing over the centuries, the main keep remains in good condition, preserving its historical battlements and structural integrity.

The complex features several significant components, including the Baronial Palace and the Lombard tower, which is considered the oldest part of the fortress. The Lombard tower boasts a circular design with a unique pitched roof and small windows originally used for guard shifts. Adjacent to these structures are the ruins of a second tower, now repurposed as a tourist lookout point, and the remains of a medieval noble chapel known as the Oratory of Our Lady of Sorrows. Dating back to the 1300s, the oratory still retains visible traces of ancient frescoes, adding to the site's cultural depth.

Today, the Rocca di Villalago serves a dual purpose as both a historical monument and a cultural center. The halls of the Baronial Palace currently house the Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions of Villalago, which opened in 2003. This museum offers visitors an immersive look into local history through informative panels and faithful reproductions of ancient trades. Exhibits specifically highlight the traditional roles of shepherds navigating the Abruzzo sheep tracks, as well as the livelihoods of local fishermen and millers, ensuring the legacy of the region's workforce is preserved within the castle walls.
