Rocca dei Rettori

The Rocca dei Rettori, also known as the Castle of Manfredi, stands prominently at the highest point of the historical center in Benevento, southern Italy. While the site has served defensive purposes since prehistoric times, including usage by the Samnites and Romans, the current structure reflects centuries of layered history. The original Lombard fortress dates back to the 8th century, but the complex was significantly transformed in 1321 when Pope John XXII ordered its restoration as a residence for papal rectors. Further enlargements occurred in the 16th century, and following damage from a 1702 earthquake, the edifice was partially rebuilt under the design of architect Carlo Buratti. For nearly three hundred years, from 1586 until 1865, the castle also functioned as a prison.

Architecturally, the fortress comprises two distinct bodies that showcase a blend of styles ranging from medieval to modern elements. The most striking feature is the Torrione, or Big Tower, which rises 28 meters and represents the only visible remainder of the original Lombard fortifications, though it was renovated to its current appearance in the 15th century. The second main structure is the Palazzo dei Governatori Pontifici, a rectangular three-story palace featuring an inner court, ogival mullioned windows, and elegant 18th-century halls with decorated wooden ceilings. The walls incorporate fragments of ancient Roman buildings, and the rear garden displays archaeological finds from the Via Traiana alongside a 1640 lion monument honoring Pope Urban VIII.

Today, the Rocca dei Rettori is in excellent condition and serves a cultural purpose rather than a military or penal one. It currently houses the Museum of the Samnium, allowing visitors to explore the rich archaeological heritage of the region within its historic walls. The site remains a testament to the diverse rulers who shaped Benevento, combining ancient necropolis findings, Roman aqueduct remnants, and papal administrative history into a single, cohesive landmark.
