The Castle of Rocca Calascio is a historic mountaintop fortress located in the municipality of Calascio within the Province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo, Italy. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,460 meters, it holds the distinction of being the highest fortress in the Apennine mountain range. Construction originally began in the tenth century as a solitary watchtower, with significant expansions occurring in the thirteenth century that added a walled courtyard and four cylindrical corner towers surrounding a taller central keep. Built exclusively from stone and masonry for military purposes, the structure was designed solely to accommodate troops rather than serve as a noble residence. Its architectural design features distinctly larger stones in the lower half, a strategic choice intended to make the base impenetrable to invaders while overlooking the Plain of Navelli.

Despite its imposing presence, the fortress was never tested in actual battle. Its decline began in November 1461 when a massive earthquake, estimated between magnitude 7 and 8, caused severe damage to the structure. While the town of Calascio below was eventually rebuilt, the castle itself was abandoned and remains in a partially ruinous condition today. Currently, the site lies within the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park alongside the high plain of Campo Imperatore. Nearby stands the octagonal church of Santa Maria della Pietà, constructed in the seventeenth century, which adds to the historical atmosphere of the location.

The castle has gained modern fame through its appearance in several major motion pictures, serving as a filming location for Richard Donner's Ladyhawke, as well as sequences for The Name of the Rose and The American. Its dramatic silhouette and preserved medieval character have also earned it a spot in the Windows Spotlight image collection for Microsoft PC lock screens. Today, Rocca Calascio stands as a silent testament to medieval military engineering and the powerful natural forces that shaped the region's history, attracting visitors interested in its unique blend of architecture, cinema history, and panoramic mountain views.
