# Renesse Castle

Castle de Renesse is a historic fortress situated in the village of Oostmalle within the municipality of Malle, located in the Campine region of Antwerp province, Flanders, Belgium. While the original structure was constructed between 1431 and 1464 by Willem van Berchem, nothing remains of that initial building today except for the central donjon, which now serves as the architectural articulation point of the complex. The current castle largely dates to a reconstruction effort between 1545 and 1548 undertaken by Jan VIII van Renesse after the site was devastated by fire in 1542 during conflicts involving Emperor Charles V. The rebuilt structure features a distinctive square main building with towers at each corner, covered in tiles and gold-colored slate, connected via a bridge to horseshoe-shaped service buildings known as the neerhof.

The estate holds significant historical importance due to its association with the influential Van Renesse family and its role in regional politics during the sixteenth century. It famously hosted distinguished guests including Emperor Charles V, Margaret of Parma, and William the Silent. However, the castle suffered greatly during the Eighty Years War, enduring military occupation and temporary confiscation by the Duke of Alba, which led to its eventual decline as a primary residence. Following the death of the last occupant in 1630, the family relocated, and the property passed through various hands over subsequent centuries. Today, the castle is owned by the municipality of Malle. Although much of the original grandeur has faded, the site retains key historical elements like the tournament beam displayed in the knight room, standing as a testament to its turbulent past and architectural evolution.
