Reinhardstein Castle

Reinhardstein Castle is a historic stronghold located in the village of Ovifat within the Warche valley of Liège Province, Wallonia, Belgium. Constructed in 1354 by Reinhard of Weismes for Wenceslaus of Luxembourg, the castle sits dramatically on a rocky outcrop surrounded by dense forest. Built primarily from red brick and white sandstone, it exemplifies medieval military architecture designed to leverage its natural defensive position. Throughout its long history, the property changed hands through inheritance and marriage among prominent noble families, including the Nesselrode, Nassau, and Schwartzenberg lines, before becoming the possession of the Counts of Metternich from 1550 until 1812.

The castle faced significant threats during the late 18th and 19th centuries, including confiscation by French revolutionary forces and near-total destruction due to quarrying activities. Its survival is largely attributed to the Prussian administration, which halted demolition efforts after the region came under their control in 1815, marking an early attempt at monument protection. Following the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, the site returned to Belgian territory. In 1969, Professor Jean Overloop purchased the ruins and undertook a thorough renovation, restoring the structure to its former glory and residing there until his death in 1994.

Today, Reinhardstein Castle remains inhabited but is also open to the public, serving as a cultural landmark and tourist attraction. Following the passing of Professor Overloop, his heirs donated the property to a non-profit organization to ensure its preservation. Visitors can explore the restored interiors and enjoy a picturesque walking route that winds along the castle grounds, offering views of the unique architecture and the surrounding Ardennes landscape. The site stands as a testament to centuries of European history, surviving wars, political shifts, and industrial threats to remain a key heritage site in the region.
