Rameyen Castle ( Hof van Rameyen )

Rameyen Castle, locally known as Hof van Rameyen, is a historic moated fortress located in Gestel, within the municipality of Berlaar in the Antwerp province of Belgium. Situated on a lake, the structure's origins date back to the 13th century, with its oldest surviving element being a heavy square keep. While the core tower is medieval, the site evolved significantly over the centuries. During the 16th century, the keep was modified with cannon holes, and later, a more beautiful chateau was constructed around the original tower by the Van Immerseele and de Cock families. The castle represents a blend of defensive medieval architecture and subsequent residential expansions, reflecting its long history of ownership by prominent Flemish families.

The castle holds notable historical significance due to its association with the Rubens family. In 1643, it was purchased by Nicolaas Rubens, Lord of Rameyen, the second son of the famous painter Peter Paul Rubens. Nicolaas died at the estate, and the property remained in the family until 1759. Throughout the centuries, the building experienced periods of decay and revitalization, including major restorations in the 19th century under Esquire Nicolaas Joseph Alphonse de Cock and further repairs following damage sustained during World War I. The last significant restoration prior to modern times occurred in 1960, preserving the structure for future generations.

In recent history, the castle underwent an extensive six-year renovation starting in 1995 after being purchased by Joseph and Claartje de Gruyter. Collaborating with renowned architects and designer Axel Vervoordt, the couple invested over 12 million Euro to modernize the 700-year-old estate while respecting its heritage. This project transformed the outlying buildings before restoring the main dwelling. In November 2015, the property was sold to NV Hof Van Rameyen, a Belgian investment company. Currently, the castle is privately owned and not open to the public, standing as a well-preserved example of Belgian aristocratic history.
