Prezë Castle
Prezë Castle, located in the village of Prezë, Albania, stands on a hilltop overlooking the Tirana plain and is situated near Tirana International Airport. Constructed in the 550s under Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, the fortress features four corner towers, with the clock tower added between 1800 and 1850. Built primarily of stone, the structure was expanded during the 14th and early 15th centuries by the Thopia family, a prominent Albanian feudal dynasty. Its strategic position made it a key defensive site throughout medieval history.
The castle holds significant historical importance as a core stronghold during Skanderbeg’s resistance against the Ottoman Empire from 1443 to 1468. Over centuries, it changed hands among the Byzantine Empire, the Principality of Arbanon, the Kingdom of Albania, and the Ottoman Empire before becoming part of modern Albania. Recognized as a cultural monument, it has served as both a military and administrative center across various eras. Today, the castle is open to the public and houses a restaurant named Kalaja E Prezës, alongside other service facilities, making it a popular tourist attraction in Tirana County that preserves Albania’s medieval heritage.
