Prandau-Normann Castle

Prandau-Normann Castle, also known as Valpovo Castle, is a historic architectural ensemble located in Valpovo, Croatia. This unique structure blends Baroque and Gothic styles, reflecting its evolution from a medieval fortress into a noble residence. The complex originally began as the Walpo fortress, constructed by Ban Ivan Morović in the early 15th century. It acquired its current form during the first half of the 18th century when Baron Antun Petar Hilleprand von Prandau initiated extensive renovations after acquiring the manor in 1721. He added a monumental palace featuring a prominent 37-meter high tower and built a new chapel dedicated to the Holy Trinity on the remains of an earlier Gothic structure.

The castle remained in the Prandau family for three generations until 1885, when it passed to the Normann von Ehrenfels family through marriage. At that time, the residence boasted 62 rooms and covered a significant area including its courtyard. Following nationalization in 1945, the property found a new cultural purpose. Since 1954, it has served as the Museum of the Valpovo Region, functioning as an open-air museum where visitors can walk through centuries of history. The site preserves a rare combination of defensive and residential elements, never fully ceasing to be a fortress nor completely becoming a standard castle.

Today, the castle offers diverse experiences, including exhibitions on noble family legacies, tours of the authentic medieval tower with a lookout point, and visits to the chapel which hosts classical music concerts on its historical organ. Guests can explore the picturesque inner courtyard, moat, gardens, and auxiliary buildings such as the theater and forest-hunting grounds. The site continues to share interesting legends and historical stories related to its former inhabitants while hosting occasional exhibitions, ensuring the preservation and celebration of this significant Croatian landmark.
