Porto Santo Stefano is a historic seaport town located on the northwestern promontory of Monte Argentario in the Province of Grosseto, Tuscany, Italy. Situated approximately forty kilometers southeast of Grosseto and 150 kilometers northwest of Rome, it serves as the municipal seat for the township of Monte Argentario. The town rests at an elevation of five meters above sea level on the slopes of Mount Argentario, which dominates the surrounding landscape. Together with the nearby town of Porto Ercole, it forms the primary population centers of this coastal region, historically divided into four distinct districts known as Croce, Fortezza, Pilarella, and Valle, each maintaining its own unique heraldic traditions.

The architectural and historical identity of Porto Santo Stefano was profoundly shaped in the mid-16th century when it became part of the State of Presidi. Due to frequent pirate raids during earlier periods under the Aldobrandeschi family and the Republic of Siena, the settlement remained minor until Spanish rule initiated the construction of the formidable Spanish Fort. This defensive structure, built to protect against maritime threats, stands as a testament to the area's strategic military importance. In addition to the main fortress, the territory retains two original Spanish lookout towers, Lividonia and dell'Argentiera, which further illustrate the extensive defensive network established during this era. The town eventually joined the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in the first half of the 19th century.

Today, the historic Spanish Fort has been repurposed to host a permanent exhibition titled "Submerged Memories," highlighting the site's transition from a military stronghold to a cultural landmark. The town remains a vibrant resort destination with a population of over 8,800 residents. Its rich history is celebrated through local traditions, including the Palio Marinaro, a maritime competition deeply rooted in the identity of its four historical neighborhoods. While the ancient fortifications define its skyline, the modern town functions as a key hub for tourism and maritime activity on the western Italian coast.
