# Pederstrup

Pederstrup is a historic manor house situated approximately 12 kilometers north of Nakskov on the Danish island of Lolland. While the estate dates back to the 1340s and retains a vaulted cellar from the mid-16th century, the current structure primarily reflects its transformation in the early 19th century. Originally a half-timbered building constructed in 1686 with later Baroque additions, it was extensively rebuilt between 1813 and 1822 in the Neoclassical style. This significant renovation was commissioned by the prominent statesman Christian Ditlev Frederik Reventlow and executed with the assistance of architect C. F. Hansen, marking a period of great prosperity for the property under the Reventlow family ownership.

The architectural history of Pederstrup is notable for its various transformations. In 1858, the manor was altered by Ferdinand Meldahl to resemble a French château complete with towers and spires. However, after the Reventlow family faced economic difficulties and sold the estate in 1938, architect Viggo Sten Møller restored the building to its former Neoclassical appearance in 1940. This restoration was undertaken specifically to prepare the site for its current function, reversing the earlier French-inspired modifications to honor the legacy of C.D.F. Reventlow and the era of Danish social reforms around 1800.

Today, Pederstrup serves as the Reventlow Museum, housing an important collection of artifacts belonging to the statesman, his family, and his associates. The museum is particularly renowned for its extensive collection of portraits painted by influential artists of the day, including Jens Juel, C.A. Jensen, and C.W. Eckersberg. These works and items provide insight into the cultural and political landscape of Denmark during a pivotal time in its history. The building stands as a well-preserved example of Neoclassical architecture and remains a key cultural landmark on the island of Lolland.
