The Venetian Fortress That Held Off an Empire - Palaiokastro, Crete
The Ottomans needed 24 years to take Crete. From 1645 to 1669. The fortress at Palaiokastro, 8km west of Heraklion, was one of the reasons it took so long. Its cannon fire crossed with the walls of the city and nothing could enter the bay. When it fell, Heraklion followed. Venetian stones, still standing. Yasou. #Crete #Greece #GreekHistory
