Palace of Cortés

The Palace of Cortés, located in Cuernavaca, Mexico, stands as the oldest conserved colonial-era civil structure in the continental Americas. Constructed between 1531 and 1535 for the Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortés and his wife, Doña Juana Zúñiga, the building features a distinctive architectural blend of Gothic and Mudéjar styles typical of early 16th-century colonization. Cortés ordered the palace to be built directly over a destroyed Tlahuica and Aztec tribute collection center, a strategic move designed to assert Spanish authority over the newly conquered indigenous populations. Originally serving as a fortified residence, the estate reached its peak prominence in the 1530s before the family eventually abandoned it due to persistent legal complications.

Throughout its long history, the palace has served various critical functions beyond a private home. During the 18th century, colonial authorities renovated the structure to operate as military barracks and a jail, notably imprisoning independence hero José María Morelos y Pavón during the Mexican War of Independence. Following the war, it became the official seat of government for the state of Morelos, a role it maintained until the late 20th century. At that time, the state government relocated, allowing the building to be transformed into a regional museum dedicated to preserving and exhibiting the rich history of the Morelos region.

In recent years, the landmark faced significant challenges when it suffered severe damage during the 2017 Puebla earthquake. This event necessitated an extensive closure for restoration work to ensure the structural integrity and safety of the historic site. After several years of careful rehabilitation, the palace successfully reopened to the public on March 30, 2023. It now operates under the name Museo Regional de los Pueblos de Morelos, continuing its legacy as a central cultural institution that bridges the pre-Hispanic past with the colonial and modern eras of Mexican history.
