Obi Castle is a historic Japanese fortress located in Nichinan, Miyazaki Prefecture. While the site was originally founded by the Tsuchimochi clan during the Nanboku-chō period, the majority of its structure dates back to the mid-15th century. The castle was officially completed in its final form in 1588 under the leadership of Itō Suketaka and the Itō clan. Constructed using earth, stone, and wood, the complex served as the administrative center of the Obi Domain for nearly three centuries, from 1588 until the Meiji Restoration in 1871. Its strategic design utilized the surrounding Sakatani River to protect the castle town on three sides, enhancing its defensibility during times of regional conflict.

The castle holds significant historical importance due to its role in the prolonged power struggles between the rival Itō and Shimazu clans. Although initially held by the Shimazu, the fortress was captured by the Itō clan in 1587, who then ruled the area until the abolition of the feudal system. Following a period of neglect after the Meiji era, the site underwent a comprehensive refurbishment in 1978. This restoration project extended beyond the castle grounds to include the adjacent town, ensuring that the entire area authentically reflects the atmosphere of an Edo-period castle town.

Today, Obi Castle stands as a preserved cultural landmark that offers visitors a glimpse into Japan's feudal past. The successful restoration efforts have revitalized both the military structure and the surrounding streets, making it a key destination for historical tourism in Miyazaki Prefecture. Recognized as one of the 100 Fine Castles of Japan, the site maintains its historical integrity while serving as a testament to the architectural and strategic ingenuity of the samurai era. The combination of natural river defenses and traditional construction materials highlights the unique character of this southern Japanese stronghold.
