Nușfalău

Nușfalău is a commune situated in the western part of Sălaj County within the Crișana region of Romania. Located on the upper course of the Barcău River, it lies approximately 35 kilometers from the county seat of Zalău. The administrative unit currently comprises two villages, Nușfalău and Bilghez, following the separation of Boghiș and Bozieș in 2005 to form their own distinct commune. Historically known by its Hungarian name Szilágynagyfalu, the area serves as a notable local hub featuring significant cultural landmarks and natural reserves.

The most prominent historical structure in the locality is the Banffy Castle, an 18th-century edifice that stands as a designated historic monument. This architectural site reflects the region's noble heritage and remains a key point of interest for visitors exploring the area's past. Alongside the castle, the commune hosts a Reformed Church originally constructed in 1450, which also holds historic monument status and represents centuries of religious continuity in the settlement. These structures highlight the blend of medieval and later architectural influences that define the local landscape.

Beyond its built heritage, Nușfalău is recognized for the Lapiș Forest Nature Reserve, which covers over 430 hectares and offers protected natural scenery. The commune has also been marked by tragic historical events, including the Nușfalău massacre, adding a layer of solemn significance to its timeline. Today, the area functions as a living community with an official online presence, maintaining its identity through the preservation of its churches, castle ruins, and surrounding woodlands while serving the needs of its resident population.
