# Nidzica Castle

Nidzica Castle is a historic brick Gothic fortress located in the town of Nidzica, Poland. Originally constructed around 1370 by the Teutonic Knights, it served as a strategic residence for the Order's Pfleger starting in 1409. The castle is architecturally significant as a prime example of 14th-century military design in the region. Throughout its early history, it witnessed intense conflict, including captures by Polish forces in 1410 and during the Hunger War of 1414. It later changed hands between the Prussian Confederation and Czech armies in the mid-15th century before undergoing reinforcement in 1517.

The structure endured centuries of devastation, including a major fire in 1784 that destroyed the inner ward and destruction by Napoleon's troops in 1812. Following these events, it was repurposed as a court and prison during the 1830s. During the Second World War, Soviet bombardment in 1945 left the castle in ruins. After the area was ceded to Poland following the Potsdam Conference, the site remained damaged until a comprehensive reconstruction effort took place between 1961 and 1965. Today, the restored castle stands as a preserved monument to the turbulent history of the Teutonic State and the broader region of Warmia-Masuria.
