# Nevytske Castle

Nevytske Castle is a semi-ruined fortress located in the Zakarpattia Oblast of Ukraine, situated approximately twelve kilometers north of Uzhhorod. Perched on a volcanic hill rising 122 meters above the surrounding woods, the site overlooks the Uzh River and historically controlled the vital Transcarpathian route through the Uzhok pass in the Bieszczady Mountains. First mentioned in 1274 as a donjon belonging to King Laszlo IV of Hungary, the structure was completely rebuilt in the early 15th century. It subsequently served as the mighty citadel of the Drugeth family, who supervised its continuous modernization over several centuries, with the keep taking its present form in the early 16th century.

The castle's current ruined state dates back to 1644, when Prince George II Rákóczi of Transylvania destroyed the fortification during internecine conflicts that convulsed Hungary. Ironically, this devastation, combined with the site's remote and inaccessible location, preserved the ruins from complete demolition that befell many other defensive structures as their military importance declined. The castle remains a significant historical landmark representing centuries of regional strife and architectural evolution. In recent years, the site has faced natural challenges, including the collapse of the donjon roof in March 2019, but partial reconstruction efforts were undertaken in early 2021 to stabilize and restore parts of the historic tower.

Today, Nevytske Castle stands as a testament to the region's complex past, attracting visitors interested in its dramatic history and scenic setting near the villages of Nevytske and Kamianytsia. While it no longer serves a defensive purpose, the ruins offer a glimpse into medieval military architecture and the power struggles of Eastern Europe. The nearby presence of an Uzhhorod Military Training Center underscores the area's enduring strategic relevance. Despite periods of neglect and structural failure, ongoing preservation work ensures that this volcanic hilltop fortress continues to dominate the landscape as a cherished monument of Ukrainian heritage.
