Melsztyn is a historic village situated on the left bank of the Dunajec River within the Lesser Poland Voivodeship of Poland. Administratively, it falls under Tarnów County and the Gmina of Zakliczyn. First mentioned in historical records in 1347, the settlement derives its name from the German word Mehlstein, which was later Polonized. The location is most renowned for its medieval castle, originally constructed on a prominent hill by the famous nobleman Spytek of Melsztyn during the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, this strategic fortress changed hands among several distinguished Polish noble families, including the Tarnowski, Jordan, Zborowski, Tarło, and Lubomirski clans.

The site holds significant historical value due to its involvement in major national conflicts. Most notably, the castle was burned in 1771 during the Bar Confederation, a period when Polish rebels fought against Russian forces on these grounds. Following this destruction, the structure remained a ruin for many years, standing as a silent testament to the region's turbulent past. Despite its long period of decay, the landmark has recently undergone a remarkable transformation. In 2023, the castle tower was fully rebuilt and restored to its former glory, marking a new chapter in the life of this ancient fortification.

Today, the reconstructed Melsztyn Castle serves as a revitalized historical attraction rather than a private residence or military stronghold. Its restoration allows visitors to appreciate the architectural heritage of the Lesser Poland region once again. The site is particularly noted for offering excellent panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the nearby Dunajec River.
