# Masmak fort

Al Masmak Fort, also known as Al Masmak Palace, is a historic clay and mudbrick fortress located in the Al Dirah neighborhood of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Situated near the al-Hukm Palace within the Qasr al-Hukm District, this structure exemplifies traditional Najdi architecture. Construction of the fort began in 1865 under the commission of Abdullah bin Faisal Al Saud, the Emir of Najd, and was ultimately completed in 1895 by Emir Abdurrahman ibn Sulaiman during the reign of the Rashidi dynasty. The building features four prominent watchtowers and thick defensive walls resting on a foundation of stone blocks, reflecting its original purpose as a secure stronghold in the commercial center of historic Riyadh.

The site holds immense historical significance as the primary theater for the Battle of Riyadh in January 1902. In this pivotal event, Abdulaziz ibn Saud led an ambush to retake the fortress from the House of Rasheed, an act that restored Saudi control over the city and marked the crucial prelude to the unification of Saudi Arabia. As one of the few historic buildings to survive in the kingdom, it stands as a tangible link to the nation's founding era. Following its preservation, the fort was converted into a museum and opened to the general public in 1995. Today, it serves as an educational site where visitors can explore the heritage and strategic history of the region through its well-preserved rooms and exhibits.
