Maraclea

Maraclea was a small coastal Crusader town and castle located in the Levant, situated between the historic cities of Tortosa and Baniyas within what is now the Tartus District of Syria. The modern-day site is known as Kharab Maraqiya. While the exact year of its original construction and specific architectural style are not detailed in surviving records, the site is noted for a square tower that stood some distance from the shore. Today, the installation is in a ruined condition, though an aerial view from 1936 documents the remaining tower structure before further degradation.

The location holds significant historical importance dating back to the early Islamic period when Caliph Mu'awiya I repopulated and garrisoned the city following the Muslim conquest of the Levant. It subsequently faced assaults from Byzantine fleets in the seventh century and ravaging by Emperor Nikephoros II Phokas in 968. During the mid-thirteenth century, ownership of the castle became a point of contention between the Principality of Antioch and the Knights Hospitaller. Its fate was sealed in 1271 when Mamluk forces destroyed the city, forcing its lord, Barthélémy de Maraclée, to flee to the Mongol Court in Persia to seek military intervention for the Holy Land.

The final chapter of Maraclea's military history occurred in 1285, when the Mamluk Sultan Qalawun blackmailed Bohemond VII into dismantling the last remaining fortifications. Qalawun threatened to besiege Tripoli if the square tower, where Barthélémy had previously been entrenched, was not destroyed. Consequently, the defensive structures were taken down, leaving the site in its current ruined state. Although no longer functional as a military installation, the site remains open to the public and serves as a tangible reminder of the complex geopolitical struggles between Crusader states, Byzantine powers, and rising Mamluk authority in the medieval Levant.
