Magic Castle

The Magic Castle is a renowned performance venue, restaurant, and private clubhouse located at 7001 Franklin Avenue in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles, California. Serving as the headquarters for the Academy of Magical Arts, this unique establishment was originally constructed in 1909 as a private residence known as Holly Chateau. Designed by architects Lyman Farwell and Oliver Perry Dennis in the Chateauesque style, the building was commissioned by real estate investor Rollin B. Lane. It stands as a near mirror duplicate of the Kimberly Crest House in Redlands, California, featuring seventeen original rooms, a roof garden, and a sun parlor that reflected the grandeur of early twentieth-century architecture.

Historically significant for its preservation and adaptive reuse, the structure remained in the Lane family until 1955 before being leased to the Larsen family in 1961. Brothers Bill and Milt Larsen, along with Irene Larsen, transformed the former home into a sanctuary for magicians, officially opening The Magic Castle on January 2, 1963. Over the decades, the venue incorporated eclectic architectural salvages, including street lamps from Venice's Victoria Pier, cast iron frieze work from a Wilshire Masonic temple, and chandeliers from the original Bullock's department store. In recognition of its cultural importance, the city designated it a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1989.

Today, The Magic Castle continues to operate as a premier destination for magic enthusiasts and performers worldwide. Following a change in ownership in April 2022, when it was purchased by Randy Pitchford, the property is managed by Erika Larsen while the Academy remains a tenant. The venue has expanded beyond its original footprint to include multiple theaters, bars, a library, and various meeting spaces. Despite these additions, it retains its historic charm and serves as a vital hub for the art of illusion, maintaining its legacy as a cherished landmark in the heart of Hollywood.
