After Byzantine unsuccessfully besieged Lovech in 1187 they were forced to recognize ''de facto'' the restoration of the Bulgarian state. It remained an important economic and commercial centre until the fall of Bulgaria under Ottoman rule in the early 15th century.

Lovech Fortress, also known as Hisarya, is a medieval stronghold situated on the two terraces of Hisarya Hill in the old town of Lovech, Bulgaria. While a Roman fortress originally occupied the site, with some remnants incorporated into the later structure, the current castle was primarily constructed during the 9th and 10th centuries. This strategic military installation features robust outer walls and stands as a significant example of early medieval defensive architecture in the region. Today, it is a protected site declared a monument of architecture and construction in 1967, remaining open to the public as one of the most visited landmarks in the city.
