Lomello

Lomello is a historic municipality located in the Province of Pavia within the Lombardy region of northern Italy. Situated approximately fifty kilometers southwest of Milan on the right bank of the Agogna river, it serves as the namesake for the surrounding Lomellina area. While the town originated as a Roman stopping place known as Laumellum along the vital Via Regina road, it flourished significantly during the Lombard domination between the sixth and eighth centuries. The site holds deep historical roots, potentially predating Roman times as a center for the Ligures, and later evolved into a strategic fortress and residence for Palatine Counts during the Carolingian era.

The town is renowned for its architectural heritage, which spans from late antiquity to the medieval period. Key landmarks include the Baptistery of San Giovanni ad fontes, dating from the fifth to seventh centuries, which stands as a rare example of early Lombard architecture. The First Romanesque Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, constructed in the eleventh century to symbolize wealth and power, remains a significant sight alongside the twelfth-century church of San Michele and remnants of medieval fortifications uncovered by recent archaeological excavations. These structures reflect the town's long-standing importance as a religious and political hub.

Lomello's historical significance is further highlighted by dramatic royal events, including the 590 marriage of Queen Theodolinda to King Agilulf. It was also the setting for a unique legal precedent in 629, when Queen Gundeberga was imprisoned and subsequently released following the first recorded "Judgement of God" in Italy. Over the centuries, control of the town shifted from the Commune of Pavia to the Visconti and Sforza dynasties, eventually becoming a hereditary holding of the Crivelli family until 1760. Today, Lomello preserves these layers of history through its well-maintained ruins and churches, offering visitors a glimpse into its prosperous past.
