Lipowiec Castle is a historic ruin located near the village of Babice in Chrzanów County, within the Lesser Poland Voivodeship of southern Poland. Situated in the scenic Polish Jura region, this fortress originally served as a residence for the Bishops of Kraków. Construction of the site began in the 13th century after it was acquired by Bishop Prandota, with significant development occurring under Bishop Jan Muskata in 1295 when the first stone structures were erected. The castle eventually assumed its definitive form during the 15th century through expansions led by Bishops Wojciech Jastrzębiec and Zbigniew Oleśnicki. Architecturally, the complex is a notable example of Polish Gothic style, reflecting the military and residential needs of high-ranking ecclesiastical leaders during the medieval period.

The historical significance of Lipowiec extends beyond its role as a bishopric seat, as it functioned as a prison for ecclesiastical offenders from the late 15th century onward. The structure suffered a long decline beginning with a major fire in 1629, followed by further destruction during the Swedish Deluge in the mid-17th century. After passing to Emperor Joseph II following the partitions of Poland, another devastating fire in 1800 left most buildings in ruins. Despite its dilapidated state, the site remained inhabited and played a role in national struggles, notably providing shelter for troops under General Marian Langiewicz during the January Uprising of 1863.

Today, Lipowiec Castle stands as an atmospheric ruin that attracts visitors interested in medieval history and architecture. While no longer serving as an active residence or fortress, the remnants of its Gothic walls offer a tangible connection to Poland's ecclesiastical past and its turbulent history of conflicts and uprisings.
