Larnaca Castle stands prominently on the southern coast of Cyprus in the harbor town of Larnaca. Originally constructed as a small Byzantine fortification, archaeological evidence suggests initial building efforts began in the late 12th century. The structure was significantly upgraded into a substantial medieval castle between 1382 and 1398 during the reign of James I of Cyprus. This expansion was driven by the need to protect the city and its emerging port after Genovese forces occupied Famagusta, making Larnaca a critical maritime hub for the Kingdom of Cyprus. The architecture reflects a blend of influences, with later observers noting Turkish stylistic elements that led some to theorize about Ottoman involvement in its development.

Throughout its long history, the castle served various strategic and administrative functions beyond defense. By the 18th century, it had fallen into semi-ruin but remained garrisoned. During British rule from 1878 to 1960, the site was repurposed as a prison complete with gallows, hosting its final execution in 1948. It continued to serve as a detention center during the Cypriot civil war when held by Greek Cypriots. Today, the property is owned and maintained by the Cyprus Department of Antiquities.

In its current state, the castle operates as a public museum and cultural venue. The interior rooms house an extensive collection of artifacts ranging from Early Christian antiquities to Byzantine wall paintings, medieval pottery, and ancient weapons. Additionally, the castle courtyard has been transformed into an open-air theater capable of accommodating 200 spectators, allowing the historic site to remain a vibrant center for arts and education while preserving its medieval heritage.
