Lanivtsi is a city located in the Kremenets Raion of Ternopil Oblast, western Ukraine. Serving as the administrative center for the Lanivtsi urban hromada, the settlement covers an area of 14.7 square kilometers and had an estimated population of 8,215 residents in 2022. The city traces its formal origins to 1545 when it was granted Magdeburg rights by a Polish king, establishing it as a significant town within the historical Volhynian Voivodeship. For centuries, it remained under Polish administration until the partitions of Poland led to its occupation by the Russian Empire from 1795 until 1918. Following World War I, it returned to Polish sovereignty as part of the Second Polish Republic before eventually becoming part of modern Ukraine, receiving its current official city status in May 2001.

The architectural and cultural landscape of Lanivtsi is highlighted by the Intercession Church, a masonry structure erected in 1857 by Teodor Jełowicki, which stands as a prominent local landmark. Historically, the city possessed a diverse demographic profile, particularly noted for its substantial Ashkenazi Jewish community. By 1897, Jews comprised nearly half of the total population, fostering a vibrant cultural life that included a Tarbut school, a yeshiva, and active Zionist movements. However, this rich heritage was severely impacted by pogroms and subsequent emigration to Western Europe and the United States, leading to a drastic population decline by the early twentieth century. Today, Lanivtsi functions as a regional hub within Ukraine, preserving its historical identity through its remaining architectural treasures and its role in local governance.
