Kyrenia CastleΚάστρο της Κερύνειας / Girne Kalesi

Kyrenia Castle, known locally as Κάστρο της Κερύνειας or Girne Kalesi, stands prominently in the northern coastal town of Kyrenia within the de facto territory of Northern Cyprus. While the site has hosted fortifications since the Byzantine era in the 7th century to defend against Arab maritime threats, the structure visible today is primarily a product of 16th-century Venetian engineering. Built upon earlier Crusader foundations, the castle exemplifies medieval military architecture adapted for the gunpowder age. The Venetians significantly enlarged the complex between 1540 and 1570, adding massive thick walls, multi-level gun ports, and long internal ramps designed to haul heavy artillery to the ramparts, giving the fortress its current imposing appearance.

The castle possesses a rich and turbulent history spanning nearly a millennium. It first gained historical prominence in 1191 when King Richard I of England captured it during the Third Crusade, subsequently selling the island to the Lusignan dynasty who ruled for three centuries. During this period, the castle withstood devastating sieges, including a Genoese attack in 1373 and a grueling four-year siege in the 15th century that starved defenders to the point of eating rodents. After passing to Ottoman control in 1570, the fortress saw further modifications, though many were later removed during British rule. Inside the walls lies the small church of St. George, likely built by the Byzantines in the 11th or 12th century, which features reused ancient Roman capitals.

Today, Kyrenia Castle remains in excellent condition and serves as a major cultural landmark and tourist attraction. Its interior houses the famous Shipwreck Museum, which displays artifacts from a 4th-century BC merchant vessel, alongside the historic twelfth-century chapel. The site offers visitors a tangible connection to the island's layered past, showcasing architectural elements from Roman, Byzantine, Crusader, Venetian, and Ottoman periods within a single fortified enclosure overlooking the old harbor.
