Koopmans-de Wet House

The Koopmans-de Wet House is a historic residence and museum located at 35 Strand Street in the heart of Cape Town, South Africa. Situated on one of the city's oldest and widest thoroughfares, the property dates back to a construction period spanning from 1701 to 1793. The building showcases distinctive Neoclassical architecture, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the Cape Colony era. As the oldest house museum in the country, it holds significant cultural value and was officially declared a National Monument on November 1, 1940. The site is currently managed by Iziko Museums, having originally become part of the South African Museum network in 1913 before opening its doors to the public on March 10, 1914.

The historical significance of the house is deeply intertwined with the development of Strand Street, which served as a residential hub for prominent citizens of the Cape Colony for two centuries. Early occupants included Thomas Christoffel Mulder, a baker who moved into the first house on the street in 1664, and Henning Huysing, a wealthy butcher who constructed one of the colony's first two-storeyed homes. These residents were often former employees of the Dutch East India Company who transitioned to become free citizens, playing vital roles in the local economy and society. The street itself evolved through various names, including Zee Straat and Breete Strand Straat, before settling on its current title in 1790.
