Kikuchi Castle, known locally as Kikuchi-jo, is an ancient fortress located in the city of Kikuchi within Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. Constructed during the 660s by the Yamato court, this military installation dates back to the Asuka period. Unlike traditional Japanese castles built in later centuries, Kikuchi Castle was designed as a Korean-style mountain fortress, a specific architectural style adopted during this era to strengthen defenses against potential invasions from the Asian continent. The structure utilized the natural topography of the region, integrating steep mountain terrain into its defensive layout to create a formidable barrier.

Historically, the castle served as a critical component of Japan's early national defense network, specifically protecting the strategic government headquarters at Dazaifu. It stands as one of several such fortifications built across Kyushu during a time of heightened political tension and military preparation.
