Kaunas Castle, known locally as Kauno pilis, is a medieval fortress located in Kaunas, the second-largest city in Lithuania. Constructed during the mid-14th century, the structure exemplifies Gothic architectural style and occupies a highly strategic position on an elevated bank where the Neris River flows into the Nemunas River. Approximately one hundred kilometers from the capital of Vilnius, this site was originally established as a crucial defensive outpost for the Ruler of Lithuania. Its primary historical function involved guarding nearby urban settlements and securing vital trade routes against external threats, making it a cornerstone of regional defense during the medieval era.

The castle holds significant historical importance due to its role in the conflicts between Lithuania and the Teutonic Order. Written accounts from 1361 reveal that the Grand Master Winrich von Kniprode ordered detailed intelligence gathering on the castle's wall thickness in preparation for an assault. This culminated in a major siege in March and April of 1362, where the Teutonic Knights employed siege towers, wall-penetration machinery, and possibly early gunpowder firearms to attack the fortress. These events highlight the castle's resilience and its central place in the military history of the Baltic region during the 14th century.

In its current condition, only about one-third of the original Kaunas Castle remains standing. Despite the partial destruction over the centuries, the surviving sections serve as a tangible link to Lithuania's medieval past. The site continues to be recognized as a key landmark within the city, preserving the memory of the strategic battles fought there and the architectural ingenuity of its builders. Today, it stands as a historical monument that attracts interest for its archaeological value and its dramatic history of siege and survival.
