Kastelholm Castle is a medieval fortress located in the municipality of Sund on the Åland Islands of Finland, situated approximately 25 kilometers northeast of Mariehamn. Constructed by the Swedes beginning in the 1380s, this historic site stands as one of only five surviving medieval castles in Finland deemed architecturally significant. Originally built on a small island surrounded by water-filled moats, the structure features design elements typical of the era, serving dual military and administrative functions for centuries. Its strategic position overlooking a fjord allowed it to act as a vital stronghold for nobles, feudal lords, and kings throughout the 15th and 16th centuries.

The castle possesses a rich and turbulent history, first mentioned in a 1388 charter by Queen Margaret I of Denmark following the estate transfer from Bo Jonsson Grip. It faced significant challenges over the centuries, including a siege during the Engelbrecht rebellion in 1433, damage sustained during the civil war of 1599, and a devastating fire in 1745 that gutted the interior and left the structure in ruins. Despite these setbacks, the castle remained a notable landmark, eventually undergoing partial restoration efforts during the 20th century to preserve its legacy.

Today, Kastelholm Castle is owned by the Government of Åland and operates as a museum and key cultural site, having served this purpose since the 1990s. Visitors can explore the refurbished grounds which offer insights into the region's medieval past and architectural heritage. The site represents an important link to Finland's Swedish era and continues to be a prominent destination for those interested in Scandinavian history, combining educational value with the atmospheric presence of ancient stone walls rising near the village that shares its name.
