Kastel Fortress is a historic town-fortress located in the very center of Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated on the left bank of the Vrbas River. While the current structure features medieval characteristics with walls constructed from tufa and limestone using dry stone walling techniques, the site holds much deeper historical roots. Geological excavations have uncovered artifacts ranging from Flint tools of the Upper Paleolithic Gravettian period to polished Neolithic ceramics and Roman currency. These findings confirm that the fortress stands on the location of a former Roman military settlement, or castra, which once marked the northernmost border of the province of Dalmatia near Pannonia.

The fortress gained significant strategic importance after being captured by the Ottoman Empire in 1527, serving as a key military installation for both the Ottomans and later the Austria-Hungary occupants. In its prime, it was a formidable defensive structure surrounded by stone walls equipped with loopholes and watchtowers. Today, the property is owned by the Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina and has undergone restoration efforts to preserve its integrity. It was officially designated as a Category II National Monument on May 4, 2004, recognizing its profound cultural and historical value to the region.

Currently, Kastel Fortress stands as one of Banja Luka's primary tourist attractions and a well-preserved landmark open to the public. Its condition reflects successful conservation work, allowing visitors to explore a site that encapsulates thousands of years of human history, from prehistoric settlements to imperial military strongholds.
