Karksi Castle is a medieval fortress ruin located in the town of Karksi-Nuia within Mulgi Parish, Viljandi County, in southern Estonia near the Latvian border. While the site served as an administrative center as early as the 12th century, the construction of the stone and brick castle began during the Middle Ages, with a vogt first mentioned in records in 1248. The building process faced significant delays due to repeated destructions before the structure was finally completed in the 14th century. Architecturally, the complex featured an inner castle separated from the outer ward by a moat, characterized by sturdy rubble stone walls and two distinct square towers that remain visible today.

Historically, the castle held strategic importance as a key stronghold for the Teutonic Order in southern Estonia and became the residence of the local commander in 1470. Its military significance lasted until the Great Northern War, during which the fortress was severely damaged and subsequently abandoned without ever being rebuilt. Although very little of the inner structures survives, the outer walls and towers are relatively well-preserved, offering a glimpse into its past defensive capabilities. The ruins stand as a testament to the region's turbulent history involving various military conflicts over several centuries.
