# Kamengrad Fort

Kamengrad Fort is a medieval ruin situated on a plateau overlooking the settlement of Donji Kamengrad in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Positioned strategically above the Bliha River, the fortress lies along the historic communication line connecting Sanski Most, Bosanska Krupa, Bihać, and Prijedor. The site features a distinctive triangular foundation that narrows toward the eastern side. Although the exact original construction date remains unspecified in available records, the fort was frequently renovated throughout its existence to maintain its structural integrity and defensive capabilities.

Historically, the fortress first appeared in documents in 1374 as property of the Blagajski nobles under the Diocese of Sana. It later became a significant military stronghold within the Ottoman Empire after changing hands in 1498, despite a Musalla dedicated to Sultan Fatih Mehmed being built there earlier in 1463. The site's strategic importance diminished only after Ottoman forces conquered the broader Bihaćka Krajina region. Early visual representations of the fort were preserved in a 1530 gravure found in the itinerary of Benedikt Kuripešić, offering rare insight into its appearance during the transition of power.

Today, Kamengrad Fort exists as an archaeological site and has been officially declared a national monument by the Commission for the Preservation of National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This designation, granted in 2008, recognizes the location as a protected historical area of significant cultural value. While currently in a ruined state, the site stands as a testament to the region's complex medieval and Ottoman history, preserving the legacy of the noble families and military forces that once controlled this vital defensive position.
