Fort James

Fort James is a historic fortified trading post located in Accra, Ghana, situated directly next to the Jamestown Lighthouse. Constructed in 1673 by the Royal African Company of England, the structure was originally established to facilitate the trade of gold and enslaved people along the coast of the former British Gold Coast. It stands alongside other significant European fortifications in the region, such as the Dutch Fort Crèvecœur and the Danish Fort Christiansborg. The fort likely derives its name from James, Duke of York, who served as the Governor of the Royal African Company at the time of construction and later became King James II. The adjacent neighborhood of Jamestown also shares this namesake origin.

The site holds profound historical significance and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 as part of a collective group of forts and castles that testify to the European colonial era in West Africa. Beyond its commercial origins, Fort James served a starkly different function for centuries as a prison, operating in this capacity from the colonial period until 2008. Notably, Kwame Nkrumah, who would become Ghana's first president, was imprisoned within these walls alongside common criminals between 1950 and 1951 during the struggle for independence.
