Jaitak Fort

Jaitak Fort is a historic military installation located approximately 15 kilometers north of Nahan in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Perched atop the Jaitak Hills at an elevation of 1,479 meters above sea level, the fortress occupies a steep slate ridge that offers commanding panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Kayarda Dun. Constructed primarily from granite stones and lime mortar, the structure was originally built in 1810 by the Gurkha leader Ranjor Singh Thapa. Historical accounts suggest that the materials used for its construction were largely recovered from the nearby Nahan Fort and Palace, which had been attacked and ransacked by Thapa and his men prior to the new fort's establishment.

The site holds profound historical significance as the theater for a major conflict during the Anglo-Nepalese War. Between December 26, 1814, and May 15, 1815, fierce battles were fought here between British forces and the Kingdom of Nepal's army, which was led by the renowned commander Kaji Amar Singh Thapa. Despite being outnumbered, the Nepali forces successfully defeated the joint British and Sirmour army in this strategic engagement, a victory that resulted in the reported deaths of 600 soldiers. This period marks the fort as a critical landmark in the region's military history, commemorating the bravery of the Gurkha troops against colonial expansion.

Today, Jaitak Fort exists in a state of ruins under the control of the Government of Himachal Pradesh. While the original defensive structures have deteriorated over time, the site remains accessible and features a war memorial and various statues dedicated to the historical figures associated with the 1815 battle. The location continues to attract visitors interested in its strategic setting and the remnants of its past glory, including views from the Haweli area. Although no longer an active garrison, the fort serves as a silent testament to the intense warfare that once defined this border region between Nepal and British India.
