Ivangorod Fortress is a historic military installation located in the town of Ivangorod within Russia's Leningrad Oblast. Constructed in 1492 during the reign of Grand Prince Ivan III, the castle was built in a single summer on the east bank of the Narva River. Its strategic position directly opposite Hermann Castle in Estonia established it as a critical bulwark for Muscovy against the Teutonic Order and later the Livonian Knights. The original structure was a strictly quadrilateral fortification with walls reaching fourteen meters in height, designed to secure Russian access to the Baltic Sea. Over subsequent centuries, the site evolved from a compact castle into a sprawling complex featuring multiple lines of defense and reinforced bastions, marking it as one of the strongest defensive structures of the sixteenth century.

The fortress possesses a turbulent history defined by frequent changes in sovereignty due to regional conflicts. It changed hands numerous times during the Livonian War, the Time of Troubles, and the Great Northern War, shifting control between Russia and Sweden before Peter the Great permanently reclaimed it in 1704. Following World War I, the site served briefly as a prisoner of war repatriation camp before returning to Russian rule after World War II. Today, Ivangorod Fortress stands as a preserved museum and popular tourist attraction. Visitors can view its imposing stone walls and internal churches while observing the unique geopolitical landscape where the fortress faces its Estonian counterpart across the river border.
