Imabari Castle is a historic Japanese fortress located in the city of Imabari within Ehime Prefecture, facing the Seto Inland Sea. Originally constructed between 1602 and 1606 by the renowned castle designer and daimyo Todo Takatora, it served as the administrative center of the Imabari Domain throughout the Edo Period. The site was strategically chosen to control the narrow maritime channels connecting Shikoku and Honshu, acting as a counterbalance to rival forces in Hiroshima. For most of its feudal history, the castle was ruled by a branch of the Hisamatsu-Matsudaira clan, cementing its role as a pivotal military and political hub in ancient Iyo Province.

Architecturally, the fortress is celebrated as one of Japan's three famous Mizujiro, or castles on the sea. Its unique design features three concentric enclosures surrounded by water moats directly connected to the ocean, allowing ships to dock within the fortified walls. Although the original five-story main keep was dismantled in the late 19th century following the Meiji Restoration, the structure has since been faithfully reconstructed. Today, the castle stands in excellent condition as a prominent cultural landmark and tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into traditional defensive engineering and maritime history.

The location holds deep historical significance dating back to the Heian period, having once been a stronghold for rebel forces and the maritime Murakami clan before Todo Takatora's development. Its ability to integrate the sea into its defense system made it nearly impregnable during times of conflict. While the original buildings from the early 1600s no longer survive intact, the reconstructed grounds preserve the legacy of one of Japan's most innovative castle builders. It remains a key symbol of Imabari, blending natural coastal beauty with rich samurai heritage.
